Malmö, Sweden, 30 September 2026, Lundair Freeze AB, a Swedish medical technology company specializing in advanced air-based shock-freezing systems for blood plasma, today announced that it has filed a patent application covering technical solutions being developed for its next generation of plasma freezing technology.
The patent application represents an important milestone in Lundair’s technology development and forms part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its intellectual property position within blood plasma freezing. The technology is being developed with a clear objective: to maintain rapid, reliable and uniform plasma freezing performance while preparing the refrigeration platform for the environmental and regulatory requirements of the future.
Lundair’s next generation of LUNDAIR® plasma shock freezers is being developed around a new refrigeration platform using CO₂ (R744) as refrigerant. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of approximately 1, CO₂ represents a major step away from traditional high-GWP refrigerants.
The refrigeration package creates the cold, while Lundair’s controlled high-velocity airflow transfers that cold rapidly and uniformly to the plasma. The refrigerant remains within a closed refrigeration circuit and does not come into contact with the plasma. In simple terms: CO₂ creates the cold. Air does the freezing.
The development is particularly relevant as European requirements for fluorinated greenhouse gases continue to evolve. Lundair is therefore designing its next-generation platform with future regulatory requirements, freezing performance, reliability and lower-GWP refrigeration technology in mind.
“The patent application is an important step in protecting the technology we are developing for the next generation of LUNDAIR plasma freezers,” said Richard Lundin, CEO of Lundair Freeze AB. “Our mission remains the same: to deliver the freezing performance and reliability required by blood banks. What is changing is the technology platform, preparing LUNDAIR for a future with lower climate impact and evolving regulatory requirements.”
Lundair is currently progressing with the MDR conformity assessment of its LUNDAIR® Blood Plasma Shock Freezer LF-24 while continuing the development of its next-generation technology platform. The newly filed patent application is an important part of that development and the technology is now patent pending.
The company is preparing the platform for international markets where blood banks are increasingly focused on performance, reliability, regulatory compliance and the transition towards lower-GWP refrigeration technologies. Same mission. New generation. Lower climate impact. LUNDAIR Freeze, ready for what’s next.
